Rapid Transfer Port RTP Knowledge

A castus Transfer Port (Rapid Transfer Port - RTP) is a transfer system through which material or instruments can be sterilely transferred into or out of an isolator. These components are often required for the production of drugs or vaccines.

The RTP consists of an alpha Port, which is firmly built into the isolator wall, and a mobile beta Transfer container, which is docked to the alpha Port with a 60° rotation. This results in a closed unit and the door can be opened inside via glove ports without breaking the hermetic seal. This way, the material is quickly and contamination-free transferred into the isolator.

Opening the alpha Port is only possible if the beta Transfer Container is docked correctly. A safety mechanism prevents improper use of the Transfer System.

Depending on the size, Rapid Transfer Systems currently have a usable diameter of 85 - 440 mm. The alpha flange is made of stainless steel and the hinged door is mainly made of plastic. The beta equipment usually consists of a stainless steel or plastic container as well as a beta flange and a beta inner lid.

The transfer locks differ especially with regard to the application, whether solid or liquid substances are introduced. When using RTP systems, compliance with the sterility chain must be observed. RTPs are critical points in the aseptic process and are therefore subject to continuous optimization. They must fit precisely, provide optimum protection for the operator and product, be easy to clean and are subject to a high degree of individualization.
